Things to be thankful for

Alright, I am going to start this off by saying that this is going to be one of my more sentimental blogs. As 2020 is closing out and all of us are tirelessly waiting for a new and hopeful better year to arrive, I figured now would be a good time to give thanks. Now if you’re American you’d probably say that the time to be thankful was on Thanksgiving, but I am not American and this is my blog so here goes!

Looking to the past

If you've kept up with my blogs you might know that everything I am doing here is part of a school project. However, over the past couple of months, it has morphed into something much more. When I first began I wasn’t very hopeful, and I didn’t have much experience with the whole raising awareness thing. I thought that this little project would go unnoticed and die off when I submitted the final report.

But that couldn’t be further from the truth! Since I've started I have been building up great social media engagement. People are learning about colour blindness and more people from outside organisations are jumping at my idea. My goal to get colour blind glasses into art galleries and places of natural beauty seems to have really struck a cord.

I am not going to pretend that people stop me in the street to take pictures (yet), but my following has certainly grown a lot bigger and faster than I expected, and I hope it continues that way. Of course I haven’t done this all on my own. I have my project supervisor, partnership director and the Head of PR at Enchroma (suppliers of the colourblind glasses) to thank as well.

Looking to the future

Even though I am more than halfway through my project, I still have a lot to do. I have now realized that this is not a short term mission and I will probably still be working to achieve my goal well after the deadline. I am even writing this blog right now over my winter break.

It's not been smooth saling all the way either. Although I have had many successes, I have had my fair share of failures. The best I can hope for in the future is to learn from my mistakes and use the learnings to multiply my success moving forward. As always, I hope to expand my network even further to try and make my idea a reality. The thing to keep in mind is that this is only the beginning. I have already come up with ideas for expansion and getting more glasses into more places, and educating more people on colour blindness and ultimately helping people who suffer from colour blindness. After all, that's 4.5% of the UK population - almost 3 million people - staggering, I know!

Whenever I lose motivation for this project, I just think about how many people will benefit from what I am trying to do. To normal sighted people this might not seem like a life or death situation, or seem like something that can impact your life in any meaningful way, but by doing this I am opening up doors for people, showing them what can be. Of course I can’t leave out the most important people to thank: you, the reader. Thanks to you, even if you don’t read every single one of my blogs, even if there aren’t many of you reading, you have helped me to improve my writing ability and have shown me that I am capable of most things if I put the effort in. I hope you learnt something, and as always: thanks.
