So for once I haven’t mistimed my blog post. I am writing about my new year’s resolution on the first of January! That ticks off my last new year’s resolution of being on time more often. I have a feeling that the first of January 2021 will have many different symbolic meanings for many different people. I know one of those meanings for me is the continuation of my project, so let's get into it.
Mission 2021
If you have read my previous blog on Things to be thankful for, you're already aware of some of my plans for the future, but in this blog I want to go into more detail.
In a nutshell: Mission 2021 is getting colour corrective glasses into places like gardens, parks, and galleries. My blog and social media pages are part of a bigger strategy to build a social media presence and create awareness for colourblindness. I am aleady approaching galleries and Enchroma (suppliers of the glasses). My goal for January is to get at least one big gallery on board, raising awareness with a big launch.
The hope is that more galleries and parks in the UK will follow suit. Who knows? Maybe this can even lead to a more international presence of colour corrective glasses in key venues. Ultimately this will culminate in the general public being more aware of colour blindness. So, what has this got to do with new year’s resolutions? Well, I am committing my time and energy to seeing this project through, even if it runs over the deadline. This project will do more than just benefit me, but millions of people. Who knows, maybe this will kickstart a cure to colour blindness?
Hope is not a strategy
I am just going to go off the topic of colour blindness for once and talk about the concept of new year’s resolutions. (Look, I have been writing about colour blindness since September, let me have this). Lots of people complain about new year’s resolutions ,saying that they are pointless and no one ever sees them through anyway. I can agree with that last part, no one ever does them, but is it wrong to set goals for yourself? I say no, definitely not. Without a goal, you're just dreaming and hoping and 'Hope is not a strategy'.
At the same time, you don’t have to set goals around New Year. Any other time of the year is also fine. But don’t get me started on SMART goals. No one should be put through that hell. It's all well and good to have a goal that is measurable for others to see, but at the end of the day, we don’t set goals for other people. You set them for yourself. So you and only you will know when you have reached your goal or not. Or you can just not set a new year’s resolution.
So, there you have it, my new year’s resolution is to keep working hard and see my goals through to the end (pretty simple when you think about it). I hope you all have a better year than the last. Yes, the bar is pretty low, but on the bright side...we've learned that scientists are amazing and that people can do great things if they put their minds to it. It's that spirit that will make my project a success as well. Mission 2021... lift off!
