A man on a mission

In last week’s blog I wrote about colour corrective glasses and how they work, and this week’s blog is also heavily related to that. I'm sure many of you think that I am writing this for fun or to get a little practice, but I actually have an alternative motive. Yes, like most things I have done in life this is part of a wider crusade for equality and justice in the world, or as most people call it: a school project.

My “Crusade”

As you may or may not, I am a 10th grade IB student. To graduate I need to complete a personal project - a year long commitment to a topic that you are interested in, culminating in a product or outcome. (I actually talked about this in a previous entry. You should read it, and all the other ones too!).

Now, I am not going to pretend I am having the time of my life with this project. There are MANY hoops you have to jump through to get this thing right, but I am halfway through and now seems like a good time to tell you all about what I am doing. My personal project is on making art galleries and places of natural beauty more inclusive to colour blind visitors by having colour corrective glasses or viewfinders available for those that need them.

How is the project going?

Well, why thanks for asking! The project is going really well actually. Let's just say I have been sending loads of emails out. I am going to be real, I didn’t always get a response, but I have 2 very exciting contacts: Enchroma and Orbis.

For the past couple of weeks I have been in contact with Enchroma, the suppliers of colour blind glasses, rounding up all these venues to get them on a video call to see if this idea is feasible. I am also going to meet with the head of charity at my school, who has connections to Orbis, to try and spread awareness about colour blindness in lower school. It is only early days, but hopefully I will be able to speak to these people, sort out a plan, and have it implemented sometime next year. This is probably going to go over my project deadline, but like I said, this is something I am passionate about, so I won’t stop until I can walk into a gallery and ask for my pair of colour blind glasses.

So there you go, my big “secret” is out, I have just been doing my school work very publicly all this time. But seriously, this project has been a blast and I’ve learnt a lot on the way. I know I don’t have a mass following (yet!) and people don’t stop in the street to ask about my blogs, but the amount of traction this has gained is absolutely incredible and a lot more than I expected (that is a little sad I know, just let me have my moment), and to those who read my blogs, even semi-regularly, thanks. Stay tuned for my round of quick fire Christmas blogs over the next two weeks!
