Here it is, the final Christmas blog! Over the past four days I have been writing Christmas themed blogs, a glimpse into a colourblind festive season. Today I will be focusing on the aspect that everyone loves the most: gifts. Let's be real, everyone says it's the season for giving, but after this year it is definitely the season for receiving. But not just any gifts, gifts for the colourblind. I would like to add that if you are reading this for gift advice, you may be a little too late, but hey, there is always next year! Let's get into it.
The obvious answer
So if you have read even one of my previous blogs (please do read some more) you know that I always mention colour corrective glasses. I have even done an entire blog dedicated to them. So if it hasn't hit you already, let me tell you: colour corrective glasses. See? Like I said obvious. There are two main companies that do colour corrective glasses: Enchroma and Pilestone. They are very simple to get. First, you take an online test to see what kind of colour blindness you have and then you can pick your style of glasses.
I have a pair of each (Enchroma and Pilestone), and take it from me it will probably be the best Christmas present a colourblind person could get this year, maybe ever. Seriously, they don’t know what they are missing. It's not just a novelty item either. It can seriously help benefit your day to day life and is even used to help colour blind people with their job. They are a bit pricey, but it will definitely be something they treasure.
The not so obvious answer
If you are one of those people who buy Christmas presents, not because you want to make other people happy, but instead make everyone laugh on Christmas morning (shout out to my entire family); then maybe get them one of those bad quality, novelty gifts that points out their condition.
Some of the ones I’ve seen are the shirts that say “I know I’m colourblind, but I still look good in green” and then the shirt is red. Anther one is a pie chart that has no colour or one with the ishihara test on it, and in the little bubble it says something like “if you can’t read this you’re colourblind”. As you can tell these are really tacky gifts, but if you’re doing Christmas on a budget this year, this is definitely a route to go. This is also a good Secret Santa gift, if you do that sort of thing.
Just on a random tangent I did a Secret Santa once and I got a half eaten box of Lindt chocolate. The worst part was that the person who gave it to me (you know who you are) just re-gifted the thing they got for Secret Santa. To be completely honest, I’m not much better. I got my Secret Santa Minecraft fan fic from the Amazon bookstore, but at least my gift wasn’t used. Still, if you know someone who is colourblind (it is very unlikely that you don’t) send them a little something, just to let them know at least someone remembered they can’t see red or green. Anyway that does it for my Christmas blogs, but tune in next week for more rapid fire blogs. Merry Christmas!
